National recognition for CAPA College as they win two Sixth Form Colleges Association Awards 2021

CAPA College are honoured to have won two Sixth Form Colleges Association awards for 2021, both the award for ‘Governance’ and ‘Covid Above and Beyond’.

Since its formation in 2006, CAPA College has developed a regional and national reputation as a centre of excellence in the Arts with outstanding exam results, exceptional student progression routes and critically acclaimed, award-winning performances.

CAPA College is delighted to be a DfE-funded Free School within the Enhance Academy Trust. This allows the college’s outstanding legacy to develop and expand, to give even more talented, creative young people from across Yorkshire and the North of England access to the highest quality of Arts training and education.

The ‘Governance’ SFCA award commends the hard work of the CAPA College governing body whose remarkable leadership and support has been vital in the ongoing success of the college.

Claire Nicholson, CAPA College principal stated: “The Governance award is fantastic recognition of our incredible Governors and the support, enthusiasm, vision, leadership and challenge they have provided CAPA College over the years.”

CAPA College also won the SFCA 2021 award for ‘Covid Above and Beyond’, celebrating their exceptional response during unprecedented circumstances.

From the first UK lockdown in March 2020, CAPA College launched its virtual campus within a matter of days. Laptops were issued on long-term loans with students taking part in a full remote learning timetable with live-streamed classes, active-participation dance, drama and singing workshops, collaborative digital projects, virtual tutorials and masterclasses with renowned guest artists from across the world.

The challenge of Covid-19 has inspired CAPA College to push digital boundaries. From investing in new digital software including Soundtrap and WeVideo, to digital collaborations and multiple live-streamed performances, CAPA College are not only ensuring that their students are not disadvantaged by the current pandemic, they are equipping them with the skills to flourish in the new digital world.

CAPA College has received an abundance of positive feedback from students, parents and carers surrounding the college’s exceptional response to Covid-19:

“We continue to be amazed by the positive, organised and thorough approach that is being taken during this time of remote learning. Although this has not been the academic year that any of us wanted, you and your team have strived to make the CAPA College experience the best it can be and we are truly grateful for the experiences you continue to provide.”

“Thank you so much for all the hard work you and your team have done in providing a continued amazing learning experience. We have been so impressed with every aspect; how you have planned for each eventuality and how you have kept the students’ experience and safety front and centre.”

The entire CAPA College team is committed to giving all students the very best Arts education and opportunities in the North; we are delighted to receive two awards that recognises and celebrates our hard work throughout 2021.

CAPA College provide an evening of festive spirit via live stream

On Thursday 6th December, the talented CAPA College Musical Theatre students provided viewers with an evening of festive song in ‘Home for Christmas’. The magic of Christmas was brought directly to the viewers from the comfort of their homes via live stream as the students performed some old favourites alongside some less well-known seasonal repertoire.

Despite the challenges brought by Covid-19, CAPA College have worked tirelessly to ensure that the Arts remain alive, even without the possibility of having a live audience. After the success of their live streamed Intensives Week performance, the annual Christmas show was up next!

The live streamed event was an incredible opportunity for the Production Arts Pathway to work within the technical team to develop new skills in photography, filming, live broadcasting, sound and set design, whilst experiencing working on a live streamed event. The students rose to the challenge and excelled in working as a team to ensure that the event ran smoothly.

The stunning vocals from the first year Musical Theatre students combined with a wholesome and festive set led to a show that provided an evening of Christmas spirit and joy. It received tremendous feedback with one ticket holder stating: “It was really lovely to watch. Fantastic talent both in front and behind the cameras. Thank you for working around the Covid situation and allowing the students to do what they love.

Thank you everyone that tuned into this Christmas extravaganza. From all of CAPA College, have a very Merry Christmas!
